In our analysis of over 50,000 EASHL clubs on ChelHead, we've found that teams with identical win-loss records can have vastly different underlying performance metrics.
Take this real example: two Division 3 centers, both with 2.0 points per game. On paper, they look identical. But one has a DTW of 58% and defensive rating of 7.8, while the other has a DTW of 41% and defensive rating of 6.2. The first player's team wins 15% more games when he's on the ice. The second? His team actually loses more often when he plays. Same basic stats, completely different impact on winning.
Deserve to Win (DTW): A Game-Changing Metric
DTW is probably the most eye-opening stat on ChelHead. It evaluates whether teams actually deserved their results based on shot quality, possession, and scoring chances—not just the scoreboard. We've tracked thousands of clubs and found that DTW is incredibly predictive of future performance.
Here's why it matters: clubs with DTW above 55% win 68% of their games over the long run, even if they're currently below .500. They're creating the right opportunities; the wins will come. Meanwhile, clubs with DTW below 45% only maintain a 42% win rate long-term, even if they're riding a hot streak. They're getting lucky, and regression is coming.
I looked at one Division 4 club that went 5-5 in their last 10 but had a DTW of 63%. Two weeks later? They were 12-3 in their next 15 games. Another club was 7-3 with a DTW of 44%. They went 4-11 over the next month. DTW doesn't lie—it shows you what's really happening beneath the surface.
Player Scoring System
Beyond traditional point totals, ChelHead's player scoring system evaluates contributions across multiple dimensions. This comprehensive rating considers factors like:
- Shot quality and shot selection
- Possession metrics and puck control
- Defensive contributions
- Positional play and decision-making
- Impact on team performance
A player who consistently makes smart plays, creates high-quality chances, and contributes defensively may have a higher player score than someone who racks up points but hurts their team in other ways. This helps identify players who are truly valuable to team success versus those who simply accumulate statistics.
Position-Specific Analysis
Advanced metrics also account for position-specific responsibilities. A defenseman's value isn't measured the same way as a forward's. Defensemen are evaluated on their ability to break up plays, move the puck effectively, and contribute offensively when appropriate. Forwards are evaluated on their offensive creativity, finishing ability, and defensive awareness.
Goalies have their own set of advanced metrics that go beyond save percentage and goals against average. Quality of shots faced, rebound control, and positioning all factor into a more complete evaluation of goaltending performance.

Understanding advanced metrics helps players and teams make better decisions. When evaluating potential roster additions, advanced metrics reveal more than traditional stats alone. A player might not have impressive point totals but could be contributing significantly in other ways that advanced metrics capture.
